Police say alcohol may be behind Arlington crash that killed worker collecting trash from I-20 median

A woman working as a subcontractor for the state Department of Transportation was killed Thursday afternoon as a result of a crash on Interstate 20.

The accident took place about 1:20 p.m. in the 900 block of East Interstate 20, police said. The unidentified victim had been working to remove trash and debris from the grassy median alongside the freeway and was wearing a reflective vest when the incident took place.

Investigators believe an SUV traveling westbound near Collins Street had attempted to change lanes when it rear-ended a Jeep similarly headed westbound.

The impact caused the driver of the SUV to lose control of the vehicle, which left the roadway and struck the victim. The woman, who has not been identified pending notification of relatives, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the SUV was arrested on suspicion of intoxication manslaughter.
