Police suspect ex-Texas cadet purposely fired shots that wounded 3 classmates

Officials in southeast Texas have enhanced charges against a former police cadet in connection with a shooting that wounded three other cadets last month.

Police are no longer sure 21-year-old Clayton Whatley accidentally fired his gun during training April 25, according to the Galveston County Daily News.

The shooting happened at College of the Mainland Law Enforcement Training Academy in Texas City, about 35 miles southeast of Houston.

Officers initially thought Whatley’s gun discharged by accident when he reached into his bag. Two cadets were struck in the calves — a man and a woman — and a third cadet was grazed.

Police initially charged Whatley with unlawful carrying of a weapon, according to the Galveston County Daily News.

The charges were enhanced after the injured woman told police she had been feuding with Whatley, and she believed she was targeted, the newspaper reported.

Whatley was charged Thursday with two counts of aggravated assaulted with a deadly weapon, records show. He was no longer in custody as of Saturday, according to Galveston County Jail records.
