Strong storms hit morning commuters in Houston

Drivers should be cautious on the roads this morning as a line of strong storms moves through the Houston area.

The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for the area from now until 8 a.m. Dozens of flood prone areas have been reported on the Houston TranStar map, including a concentrated amount in southwest Houston from the Texas Medical Center to NRG Stadium to Westbury.

Two clusters of heavy rainfall dropped about an inch of rain in 15 minutes earlier this morning, according to Jeff Lindner, a meteorologist with the Harris County Flood Control District. Two to three inches of rain is possible within an hour in some parts of northwest and central Harris County, forecasters say.

The Houston Fire Department already rescued three people this morning who were stranded on a sandbar in Lake Houston in the Kingwood area, according to a tweet from the fire department. In the city, street flooding is expected to linger for a few hours, Lindner said.

Showers and thunderstorms will remain possible through the afternoon, mainly before 1 p.m.
