Teen Killed, 3 Other Students Injured in Rollover Crash

A 16-year-old girl is dead and three other teenagers are hospitalized following a crash in Dallas Wednesday morning.

Dallas Police say an SUV was traveling northbound on Westmoreland near Illinois Avenue at about 8:45am when it was clipped by a car crossing Westmoreland. Investigators say the collision caused the SUV to lose control, spinning off the road and ultimately hitting a pole.

The Dallas Independent School District says all four of the passengers and driver of the SUV were students at Kimball High School in Dallas.

“This is the most challenging day we’ve had to face within the recent months,” Robyn Harris, a spokeswoman with DISD said.

Dallas police say a 16-year-old girl riding in the backseat was ejected and died at the scene. The girls parents have identified her as Daisy Torres.

“She was just an amazing girl,” said family friend Laura Rodriguez. “At first, you don’t believe it and then it starts hitting you like more and more that she’s actually gone and that she is not going to come back.”

Torres’ family and friends gathered for a candlelight vigil Wednesday night at theh site of the crash.

A 16-year-old girl riding in the front seat suffered a broken ankle, a 15-year-old boy in the backseat suffered head injuries and a girl riding in the rear middle seat suffered a broken leg, according to Dallas Police. The 16-year-old driver of the SUV was unhurt.

The 19-year-old driver of the car stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

“We believe speed is a factor but we’re trying to confirm that,” Sgt. Warren Mitchell with the Dallas Police Department said.
