Texas Weather: Strong thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes are possible Saturday

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Severe thunderstorms capable of producing a few tornadoes are possible today. Meteorologist Collin Myers said the timing will be critical to storm development.

A large tornado was spotted in Franklin, Texas, just after 11 a.m. Saturday. A Tornado Warning has been issued for parts of Grimes, Houston and Madison counties until 1 p.m.

A Tornado Watch has also been issued for Alexandria, Conroe, Huntsville and The Woodlands until 7 p.m.

Also, a few flights headed to Dallas Forth Worth Airport had to be diverted to IAH due to weather.

The good news for Houston is the warm front likely passes us by during the most stable time of the day, bringing scattered morning showers but no serious thunderstorms. Strong scattered thunderstorms are possible during the first half of the afternoon as a cold front approaches from the west.

Our northern counties will be the favored area for the strongest storms but Houston may also see a strong storm or two. Hail, wind. and isolated tornadoes will be possible. The rain chance drops southwest of Houston down to 20 percent near Matagorda Bay, meaning some of our communities will most likely miss the rain and thunderstorms completely.

By Saturday evening, we are drying out and cooling off. Low temperatures will dip into the 40s Sunday morning. The cool northwest wind will keep highs only in the 60s despite all the sunshine.

Our next chance for strong storms will be Wednesday, and Travis says this weather system will help break the pattern of weekend storm chances. In fact, our early outlook for Easter weekend is filled with sunshine and pleasant spring temps!
