Two charged with murder in man’s death following LBJ Freeway shooting in April

Two men have been charged with murder in the death of a 19-year-old man who crashed into a concrete pillar after being shot at in April in Lake Highlands.

Orlin Steven Bonegos, 18, and Jose Henry Machado, 20, were arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service North Texas Fugitive Task Force and Dallas police in connection with the death of Ruben Lopez.

Each was charged with murder after being interviewed by authorities.

Police say the incident took place about 3:30 p.m. on April 17 in the 8300 block of eastbound LBJ Service Road, where Lopez had been driving near the High Five interchange.

The vehicle Lopez was driving struck a concrete pillar after he was shot at, police said, and he later died at an area hospital.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, witnesses reported hearing three shots before Lopez’s car struck the pillar. Further examination of surveillance video showed a vehicle of interest believed to be a 2011-2014 blue Volkswagen Jetta.

Bonegos was arrested Monday on an outstanding warrant. In an interview, he confirmed he was driving the vehicle of interest at the time of the shooting, and said that it was Machado who fired at Lopez, the affidavit stated.

Police have not said which man was the alleged shooter.
