Woman killed, 4 injured as gunfire erupts at Jim’s Car Wash in South Dallas

One woman was killed and four people injured Sunday night as shots flew at Jim’s Car Wash in South Dallas, police said.

Dallas police found four gunshot victims when they responded to a car wash on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, near South Malcolm X Boulevard, around 9:30 p.m.

Sheila Sanders, 56, was pronounced dead at Baylor University Medical Center, police said.

The other gunshot victims, as well as a woman who was trampled as crowds fled the scene, are recovering at Baylor, according to police.

No arrests have been made, and police did not release descriptions of any suspects.

In March, the city’s Board of Adjustment voted unanimously to declare that the car wash, long considered a drug hotspot by Dallas police, has an “adverse effect” on neighboring properties.

Owner Dale Davenport said then that he intends to file a lawsuit to fight the decision, which would prevent him from operating a car wash on his property.

Davenport, who bought the car wash with his father in the 1990s, called the proceedings a “political witch hunt.”

The city sued Jim’s in 2004, saying Davenport hadn’t done enough to discourage crime at the 24-hour self-service car wash. In 2012, the area was rezoned, and a car wash became a “non-conforming use” of the property.
