Strict security at all courts in Islamabad as SJC hears reference today

ISLAMABAD: After holding meetings with representatives of lawyers, the capital police and administration have chalked out a plan to ensure security in and around the Supreme Court building as the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) will take up a reference against Justice Qazi Faez Isa on Friday.

Officials in the capital administration and police held meetings with office-bearers of the Islamabad High Court Bar Association and the District Bar Association. During the meetings, the lawyers’ representatives said there was no call given for a protest or a rally towards the apex court building.

They also promised to remain on the premises of their respective courts as decided by their leaders, said the officials.

On the other hand, the Supreme Court Bar Association will gather on the apex court premises during the hearing of the reference.

When contacted, District Bar Secretary Yasir Shakeel told Dawn that they had announced to observe a strike on Friday (today).

“The lawyers will observe strike and will not appear in any court,” he added.

In the light of the lawyers’ plan, arrangements have been made to maintain law and order and provide security cover to the three courts, said police officials.

About 500 policemen will be deployed around the Supreme Court building and Constitution Avenue. Eight police pickets set up in and around the Red Zone would be strengthened by deploying more manpower.

Strict checking will be conducted at the pickets and only concerned people or officials would be allowed entry. The entrances to the Red Zone may be partially sealed, if required.

Similarly, deployment is also being made at key points in the capital.
