League City couple arrested after allegedly scamming clients out of nearly $500K

A League City couple is facing felony charges after being indicted for scamming 21 people out of nearly a half a million dollars through their construction company.

Gregory and Josephine Goodnight were arrested June 20 and charged with securing a document through deception, court records show. Their bonds were set at $100,000 each

Court records show the Goodnight’s ran a construction company called Knight Construction and Renovation, Inc. that promised various home renovation services to customers.

Galveston County prosecutor Austin Fletcher told Chron.com in total, the couple scammed 21 residents out of $495,000 through 14 contracts over a two-year period from 2016 to 2018.

“That is the largest contractor theft or contractor fraud case that we have had,” Fletcher said.

Victims paid the Goodnight’s thousands for home renovation jobs such as electrical, plumbing, drywall, roofing and flooring services. He said the jobs were left incomplete, leaving customers which huge losses.

Fletcher said the couple marketed services for their construction company through various websites, such as Facebook and Yelp, and through newspaper ads, including in the Galveston County Daily News. They are the only two individuals associated with the company and outsourced all of the work through various contractors, he said.

Various civil suits had previously been filed against the Goodnights, while others had made complaints to District Attorney’s Office and local law enforcement, according to Fletcher. He said there could possibly be even more victims and asks that anyone that thinks they may have been scammed by the couple to contact the DA or local police.

As of Friday morning, Josephine had already made bail. Gregory is still in custody. Josephine is due back in court Aug. 14; Gregory is due back Aug, 16, Fletcher said.
