Suspect killed, officer wounded after shootout in southwest Houston

A Houston police officer was injured after a police chase and shootout with a suspect in southwest Houston Friday night.

A suspect was killed in the shooting, after officers returned fire following a traffic stop. The incident happened in the 10100 block of Forum Park Drive near Sugar Branch Drive.

HPD investigators say that an officer attempted to stop a Mercedes SUV near SW Freeway for traffic violations at 11:50 p.m. Friday.  The driver then fled, leading police on a short police chase.

When officers finally caught up with the suspect, he exited his Mercedes SUV with a gun in his hand. The suspect then reportedly pointed the gun at the officer and opened fire.

“The suspect came up out gun and raised it out towards the female officer,” HPD’S Chief Art Acevedo said. “She was struck twice in the right arm. Despite being struck with a gun, she was actually able to return fire.”

The officer was treated and released from the hospital, according to a tweet from Chief Acevedo.

This is a developing story.
