Woman, 62, shot and killed in moving car in Harris County while returning from doctor’s appointment

A woman on her way home from a doctor’s appointment in the Katy area was killed Tuesday night when gunfire struck her vehicle in north Harris County road, according to police.

The husband of the slain 62-year-old woman was driving her along Old Greenhouse Road near Windy Stone Drive around 6:30 p.m. when he heard what he thought was fireworks, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said. Then one of the car windows shattered along the secluded tree-lined road.

He looked over and saw that his wife had been shot in the head, the sheriff said. She was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, but did not survive.

The couple was talking about what to eat for dinner when the gunfire erupted, Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez believes the couple were “complete innocent bystanders” in what happened.

“Our hearts are broken for them,” Gonzalez said. “Maybe they just got caught in the middle of a gunfire somewhere. We really don’t know.”

A white SUV was seen traveling at a high rate of speed on the same street around the same time of the shooting.

Authorities did not immediately identify the victim.

Gonzalez urged possible eyewitnesses to call the sheriff’s office at 713-221-6000 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS with information that may lead to an arrest.
