2 arrested in fatal shooting of Arlington high school student

Arlington police have made two arrests in last week’s shooting death of a high school student.

Juanyea Flynn and Alexander KOnyeador, both 18, each face one count of murder in the death of Anthony Lemelle Strather Jr., an Arlington police spokesman confirmed Thursday morning.

Flynn faces an unrelated charge of aggravated robbery, while Onyeador also faces a count of engaging in organized criminal activity.

Anthony Lemelle Strather Jr. died Oct. 17 after being shot in the chest during an altercation just off the campus of Bowie High School, where he was a student and football player.

Officers responded to a shooting call in the 2000 block of Cliffside Drive about 4 p.m. and found three people who had been shot. A second student involved in the altercation and a man struck by a stray bullet inside his home also were wounded.

Police said Strather and the other student had likely driven to the location to drop off another teen when a car and an SUV pulled up behind them. Witnesses said six to 10 people exited the vehicles and an altercation broke out in the middle of the street. Guns were fired during the fight, police said.

Strather died at Medical City Arlington Hospital about 40 minutes after the incident. The other student was shot in the leg, and police said he and the man struck by a stray bullet had injuries that were not life-threatening.

The people in the car and SUV had fled by the time officers arrived, and students from the nearby school had flooded the scene after hearing the gunshots.

Bowie High School canceled all events that night, and students commemorated Strather the next day with a balloon release outside the school.

Flynn was being held in the Tarrant County jail Thursday, with bail set at $200,000. Onyeador was in custody at the Arlington jail, with bail set at $215,000.
