Teen rescues 11-year-old from Mansfield house fire

A Mansfield teenager returning home from swimming practice noticed a bright orange glow in his neighbor’s home and called 911 before taking matters into his own hands Monday night.

The 17-year-old ran inside the house, which was on fire, and emerged with an 11-year-old boy.

“… The boy was like, ‘Yo, what’s going on?’ And I was like, ‘Hey man, there’s a fire in your house right now. We gotta get out of here!’” Gabriel Vivoni said.

Vivoni and others reported the fire around 9:20 p.m. in the 4300 block of Gleneagles Drive. Flames spread rapidly in the two-story home, forcing firefighters into a defensive position.

Vivoni thought the glow might have been someone welding inside, he said. He knocked first, then ran to his home, told his parents and called 911. He decided to run into the home when he noticed flames coming from the garage.

“I just starting ringing the doorbell and knocking, saying, ‘Hello, you guys, you need to get out of here,” Vivoni said.

He found the boy inside, apparently sleeping while he had been watching TV, he said.

“I wanted to help,” Vivoni said. “I had a little water bottle, but I was like, ‘This isn’t going to help.’”

No injuries were reported. The fire is under investigation.
