Fort Worth officer hospitalized after driver hits her during traffic stop

A Fort Worth police officer was taken to a hospital Friday morning after she was hit by a drunken driving suspect who then tried to flee, police said.

It happened around 2:30 a.m. on the U.S. Highway 287 northbound service road near the Harmon Road exit.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was picking up traffic cones while helping a colleague conduct a traffic stop when the suspect struck her and her squad car, police said.

The suspect, 32-year-old Oscar Barragan, then fled on foot and was taken into custody after he ran into a field, police said. He faces charges of intoxication assault with a vehicle causing serious bodily injury.

Barragan also had three outstanding local warrants, Fort Worth police spokesman Buddy Calzada said at a news conference. He was injured and received medical care before his arrest, Calzada said.

The officer, who was commissioned into the force in 2016, was in serious condition at John Peter Smith Hospital. Her injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Her emergency lights were on and she was wearing a reflective vest at the time of the crash, Calzada said.

“We’re watching over her, and the medical staff is watching over her,” along with members of her family, Calzada said.
