Shooting suspect led Dallas officers on chase, crashed with small child in car, authorities say

Dallas police took a shooting suspect into custody early Monday morning after they say he fled from the crime scene in Pleasant Grove, leading police on a chase while he had a small child in the car.

Maj. Israel Herrera told reporters that shortly after police were called to the 6800 block of Barrett Drive about 4:20 a.m., officers learned that the suspect had shot someone, grabbed his child and got into a car, according to KXAS-TV (NBC 5).

Herrera said officers spotted the car leaving the scene of the shooting and began chasing it. The driver eventually crashed on westbound I-30 near Ervay Street, he said.

The child is OK, Herrera told KXAS-TV. He said there was “no time at all” for an Amber Alert in the case.

The victim, who is the suspect’s father-in-law, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his lower extremities and was hospitalized. He was in stable condition Monday, Herrera told reporters.

Police records show officers were still working the scene on Barrett Drive about 7 a.m.

Herrera told KXAS-TV that detectives were speaking with the suspect.
