Police say off-duty Trenton officer fired at suspect fleeing Lake Highlands Home Depot

Police are investigating an incident in which an off-duty Trenton police officer fired his weapon at a suspect fleeing a Home Depot in Lake Highlands Friday morning.

Officers responded about 11 a.m. to the 11200 block of Garland Road, where they were met by the officer, who was working in an off-duty capacity in full police uniform.

The officer told police he had tried to detain the suspect as he fled the store, but that the suspect was able to enter a vehicle from the passenger side.

He said the suspect attempted to accelerate the vehicle. Meanwhile, the occupant of the vehicle exited and ran to safety.

The off-duty officer fired a single shot but it is unknown whether he struck the suspect, who fled the location in the vehicle and remains at large. Police did not say why the officer had originally attempted to detain the suspect.
