Grand Prairie names assistant chief to take over as top cop

Starting next month, Grand Prairie will have a new police chief.

City officials announced Monday that Assistant Police Chief Daniel Scesney, 45, will replace Steve Dye as police chief on Jan. 18.

Earlier this year, Dye said he would be retiring from law enforcement to work full time as deputy city manager.

Scesney, who’s served as assistant police chief for three years, has commanded the department’s Investigative Services and Special Operations bureaus.

“I am both honored and humbled to be selected as the next chief of police for the city of Grand Prairie,” he said in a written statement.

Before joining the department in 2001, Scesney served as a military police officer in the Marine Corps. He received the City of Grand Prairie Chamber of Commerce Public Service Award in 2018 and this year’s Distinguished Leadership Award from Texas Christian University.
