Teenager arrested in drive-by shooting that killed 79-year-old woman in October

A 17-year-old surrendered to police Saturday in connection with a drive-by shooting that left a 79-year-old woman dead in her home last year.

Kimberly Ann Garcia, 17, is being held in the Dallas County jail on a murder charge for the death of Gloria Roque, who was shot in her South Dallas home Oct. 31. Garcia’s bail is set at $150,000.

The shooting happened about 11 p.m. in the 3700 block of Meyers Street, south of Fair Park. Roque was shot in the back while she was sitting on her couch when people in a passing vehicle fired into her window, an arrest warrant affidavit says.

Garcia told police Friday about her involvement in the shooting but was not arrested then, the affidavit says.

Garcia told police she and three other people had planned to shoot at a house belonging to Garcia’s ex-boyfriend but fired into the wrong home, according to the affidavit. She said they didn’t realize their mistake until the next day.

She told police that she’d been driving her grandmother’s car and that neither she nor the front passenger fired, the affidavit states. Garcia said the people sitting in the back seat fired into the home with pistols.

She said she found shell casings in the car the next day and threw them away, the affidavit says.

Dallas police previously said a juvenile was arrested Feb. 6 in connection with the shooting. The other two people mentioned in the affidavit do not appear to have been arrested in connection with the crime.
