Budapest to stage 2022 Europa League final

AMSTERDAM: Budapest has been chosen to stage the Europa League final in the 2021/22 season at the new 68,000-seat Puskas Arena, European football’s governing body UEFA announced Monday following an executive committee meeting in Amsterdam.

The stadium in the Hungarian capital, built at a reported cost of about 600 million euros ($667 million), was opened last November and will be the only brand new venue used for the 2020 European Championship.

It is the first time the Hungarian capital will stage a single-leg final of a men’s European club competition.

UEFA’s executive committee also revealed the venues for the next two Women’s Champions League finals, with the Juventus stadium in Turin, Italy, to stage the 2022 showpiece and the PSV Stadium in Eindhoven, Netherlands, to host the 2023 final.

The World Anti-Doping Agency has recommended Russia not be awarded major events for four years as punishment for state-backed violation of doping rules. However, this applies to world championships and Olympics rather than continental-level events.

UEFA also awarded the 2022 Super Cup to the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki, Finland.

Minsk, Belarus, was chosen to host the 2021 annual meeting of UEFA member federations.

This season’s Europa League final will be played in the Polish city of Gdansk, while Sevilla’s Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium was selected in September to host the 2021 final.

UEFA had already announced the 2021 Champions League will be played in St Petersburg, with Munich awarded the 2022 showpiece and the 2023 final being given to Wembley.

This season’s final of Europe’s premier club competition will be played in Istanbul.
