Allen ISD considering projects for revived bond election, possibly this year, after last year’s failed

It’s been just 11 months since Allen ISD’s $422.8 million bond failed in a 53-47 vote, and the district may face different challenges in passing one during the year of COVID-19 and the economic struggles it has caused for many.

Shortly before schools were forced to close because of the outbreak, Allen ISD’s board of trustees revamped its citizen bond advisory committee, which is expected to recommend capital improvement projects for a new bond in late June — possibly suggesting it be placed on ballots as soon as November.

Chief Information Officer Tim Carroll said because a decision to call a bond election hasn’t been made, the only impact the virus has presented is the inability for the committee to meet in person.

Project Kids, which has historically helped the district form bond proposals, is an 80-member committee of parents, business and community leaders, students, graduates and staff, according to the district website.

The committee has met virtually since March 17, the first of seven meetings through June 22, Carroll said.

The bond that failed last year included renovations for schools and athletic facilities, new buses and security and technology upgrades.
