Richardson resumes twice-weekly trash pickup during coronavirus pandemic

The city of Richardson is restarting its regular recycling service and twice-weekly trash pickup effective Monday, April 27.

The city modified the schedule on April 9 after the COVID-19 pandemic created staffing shortages. Now that full staffing has returned, regular services are set to resume, the city announced.

Under the modified services, residents could still drop off recyclables at two locations. The recycle drop bins at the city’s service center will no longer be available starting Monday. The recycle bin at the westside pump station, 101 N. Cottonwood Drive, will continue to remain open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

City officials ask that residents practice all Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations to help keep sanitation workers safe. Households with someone who is ill are asked to double-bag all trash before setting it on the curb.

In an announcement, the city also reminded residents to use care when handling items such as used gloves and face masks. You should wear gloves and wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after handling trash bags that contain discarded personal protection equipment.

Residents can find their trash and recycling days here. Information is also available through the MyRichardson smartphone app or by calling 972-744-4111.

The city previously announced that it would resume its regular trash pickup schedule as soon as it was safety to do so.

The city previously stated that no changes were planned for the city’s Brush and Bulky Item Collection service, which has seen an uptick due to the spring weather and more people being at home during the pandemic.

As a result, the city is asking residents to “think big” and only request service when there is enough material to require a truck to haul away the waste.

Large items weighing 50 pounds or more – including appliances and furniture – should be set out for pickup. The city is asking residents to use regular trash collection pickups for small piles of brush, lawn clippings and anything weighing less than 50 pounds.
