El Paso massacre toll rises to 23 as hospitalized victim dies after nearly 9 months

A man who was wounded in the Aug. 3 massacre at an El Paso Walmart has died, nearly nine months after the attack, in which Hispanic residents were targeted.

Guillermo “Memo” Garcia died Saturday evening, according to a hospital official, bringing the death toll to 23.

“After a nearly nine-month fight, our hearts are heavy as we report Guillermo ‘Memo’ Garcia, our last remaining patient being treated from the El Paso shooting, has passed away,” Del Sol Medical Center CEO David Shimp said in a written statement.

Garcia and his wife, Jessica Coca Garcia, were raising money for their daughter’s soccer team in the Walmart parking lot when the gunman opened fire. She escaped the attack after she was shot in the leg.

In February, a federal grand jury indicted Patrick Crusius on 90 counts, including 22 for a hate crime resulting in death, for each of the previous 22 victims who died.

After the shooting, investigators found a racist manifesto they say was written by Crusius, a 21-year-old Allen native.
