British government gives green signal for resumption of sports from June 1

Manchester: The British government has officially given the green light to resume professional sports behind closed doors from Monday, June 1.

Due to the coronavirus, sports activities in the country have been suspended for almost three months, as a result of which sports governing bodies have been working for a long time to find a way for their return.

The Department of Digital Culture, Media, and Sports today issued a new ‘Three-Phase Guide’ after close consultation with the Deputy Chief Medical Officers of England, Public Health England, Olympic, Paralympic, and Medical Representatives of the governing bodies of professional sports. Domestic games will now be allowed from Monday with strict security protocols.

Oliver Dowden, Secretary for Digital Culture, Media and Sports, called the announcement a “significant breakthrough for British sports.”

“The wait is now over and the sports would soon be restarted with precautionary measures. For more than two months after sport stopped and after weeks of round-the-clock discussions with medical experts and professional sports bodies, I’m delighted to announce today that the government has published guidance that allows the competitive sport to resume behind closed doors from Monday,” he said.

“It is now up to the individual bodies to decide whether they can meet these protocols and when they can resume sports in light of these new guidelines,” he added.
