Plano officer fatally shoots woman who stabbed him, another driver after a crash, police say

A Plano police officer fatally shot a woman who reportedly stabbed him and another driver after a car crash in a stolen vehicle Thursday morning.

Police said the officer had been responding to the collision about 7 a.m. at Legacy Drive and Independence Parkway when the woman got a knife out of her car, went to the other vehicle that was involved in the crash and began stabbing its driver.

When the officer approached the car, the woman turned to the officer and stabbed him in the left arm. She then ran around the vehicle and started to enter the car of the other driver on the passenger side, police said.

Police said that the officer shot the woman multiple times to stop her attack and that they confirmed the events with body-camera footage and several independent witnesses.

Authorities later discovered the car the woman was driving had been stolen.

All three people involved were taken to a local hospital for treatment, but the woman did not survive her wounds.

The officer and second motorist were hospitalized with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, police said.

Police identified the woman Friday as Julie Colon, 27, of Addison. The names of the officer and the other driver have not been released.

The officer was placed on administrative leave with pay while an investigation takes place, which is routine in shootings involving police. The incident is being investigated by the Plano Police Department’s Crimes Against Persons Unit and the Collin County District Attorney’s Office.
