Cases of the novel coronavirus in Irving jumped to 6,844, making it the hardest hit city in the county behind Dallas itself, according to Dallas County.

In total, 66 Irving residents have died from the virus.

Dallas County has reported 74,628 confirmed coronavirus cases and 964 deaths from the virus.

In addition, Irving has 264 probable cases of the virus. Dallas County counts probable cases separately and does not include them in its confirmed case totals.

County officials noted that research by UT Southwestern Medical Center shows that the coronavirus is probably still spreading in Dallas County.

According to the data, the county is hovering above one additional infection per carrier on an R0 chart. Pronounced “R naught,” R0 estimates how many people, on average, an infectious disease carrier will infect. If the number is above one, the epidemic is growing; below one, it is declining.

In a written statement, County Judge Clay Jenkins said that he and local health officials will continue to monitor “all of these factors very closely.”

Across the state, 3,852 more coronavirus cases were announced Thursday, along with 161 deaths from COVID-19. Texas has reported 649,809 confirmed cases and 13,853 fatalities.

There are 3,575 COVID-19 patients in Texas hospitals, including 780 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. As of Wednesday, the seven-day average positivity rate statewide was 7.8%, below the 10% threshold that Gov. Greg Abbott has said is cause for concern.

Dallas County’s case counts for Irving are updated Tuesday and Friday.
