Security officer fatally shot during robbery outside credit union in west Oak Cliff

A security officer was fatally shot Monday morning during a robbery at a west Oak Cliff shopping center, Dallas police said.

Police were called about 8:50 a.m. to the 1500 block of North Cockrell Hill Road. Police said witnesses told officers that the security officer was servicing an ATM outside Neighborhood Credit Union when he was shot.

Sgt. Warren Mitchell, a Dallas police spokesman, said the security officer was approached by someone who “demanded property” before shooting him with a rifle. Police said the gunman was wearing a black jacket with “Police” written on the back.

Police said the gunman fled in a white Volkswagen Passat.

The gunman was seen taking duffel bags from an armored vehicle before he got inside a white Volkswagen Passat and drove away, police said. Mitchell said it was unclear what was inside the duffel bags.

The security officer was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries, police said. Police identified him as 28-year-old Jose Montes.

A second armed security officer at the scene wasn’t hurt.

Police said the shooter was male and the driver was female, but didn’t provide a detailed description of either of them.
