East Arlington recreation center set to close after 50 years

After over 50 years of service, an east Arlington recreation center is closing its doors in preparation for the opening of a new facility.

The Hugh Smith Recreation Center at 1815 New York Ave. will close Monday as the city’s new East Library and Recreation Center readies to open. The Hugh Smith Recreation Center has been in operation since 1969, where it originally opened as a YMCA facility, according to the city.

The indoor pool located inside the recreation center will stay open a little bit longer, with the pool’s last day scheduled for Oct. 10. While the recreation center is closed, all other recreation centers in the city will remain open.

The closest recreation center to Hugh Smith is the newly opened Beacon Recreation Center, about seven miles away, and the Dottie Lynn Recreation Center, about five miles away.

The new East Library and Recreation Center will open Nov. 9. The Hugh Smith center’s closing isn’t the only change ahead of the East Library and Recreation Center opening, with an Arlington library branch closing as well.
