Murder suspect had been in custody battle with woman police say he shot, stabbed outside her Carrollton workplace

Carrollton police have arrested a man they say killed a woman last week as she arrived at work.

Andrew Charles Beard, 33, of Rowlett turned himself in to authorities Monday morning after they obtained a warrant for his arrest on a murder charge.

Police said Alyssa Burkett, 24, of Rockwall was shot and stabbed repeatedly about 9 a.m. Friday as she got to her workplace in the 1100 block of Mac Arthur Drive.

She and Beard had been involved in a contentious custody battle over their 1-year-old daughter, police said.

The child, who was not harmed, is in the custody of Child Protective Services.

Beard was being held in the Carrollton jail Monday afternoon, and his bail had not been set. It was unclear whether he had an attorney.
