SOPs to be ensured in elephant’s transportation

RAWALPINDI: Officials at Islamabad International Airport (IIA) and the Airport Security Force (ASF) have been directed to make arrangements in accordance with the standard operating procedures (SOP) for the smooth transportation of Kaavan to the airport from the Marghzar Zoo.

Kaavan, the lone elephant of Islamabad, is scheduled to be airlifted to Cambodia by a chartered flight at 10am on Nov 29.

Besides the wings logistics, a private limited company staff, customs handling staff and a transport team will take part in the handling, loading and transferring of the elephant through Gammon Gate (special gate) of the airport.

The 35-year-old elephant weighing 5.5 tons will be transported in an National Logistics Cell (NLC) truck with a heavy crane. The elephant is being shifted to Cambodia on the directive of Islamabad High Court in view of its improper care due to the absence of a natural habitat at the zoo in Islamabad.
