Irving firefighter hospitalized after being hit by wrong-way driver on Highway 183

An Irving firefighter who was working the scene of a crash when he was struck by a driver heading the wrong way on Highway 183 remained in serious condition Monday.

Firefighter Aaron Donohue was in the 3100 block of W. State Highway 183 on Saturday working a major, five-car accident, which shut down part of the highway. A driver heading east in the westbound lane drove onto the accident scene and hit Donohue, Irving police said in a press release.

Donohue, 30, has worked as an Irving firefighter for 4 and a half years.

Fire Chief Victor Conley told KXAS-TV (NBC5) on Monday that Donohue, who is being treated at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, has a traumatic brain injury but is showing signs of improvement.

The driver of the car that struck the firefighter, Yajaira Estrada Calderon, 23, was arrested and charged with intoxication assault with serious bodily injury to a firefighter, a second degree felony.
