This single mother in Grand Prairie was surprised with $5K just in time for Christmas

The Boys & Girls Club in Grand Prairie and Cricket Wireless teamed up to surprise an unsuspecting single mother Monday, giving her $5,000 in gifts as part of a promotion by the wireless carrier.

Katrina Davis, a mom of two children, lost her job at Parkland Hospital earlier this year due to the pandemic, according to Kelly Layne Starling, a spokeswoman with AT&T, which owns Cricket.

The Boys & Girls Club nominated Davis for the award, a gift that will be used for four months of rent relief, Starling said. Davis has struggled to find child care over the past year, and she has had to cut back on food and taken on debt. Other items presented to the Davis family included a $250 Amazon gift card, $250 cash and holiday toys for the kids.

So far, the initiative has gifted 15 families across 12 cities with up to $5,000 each.

Starling said the company is continuing the program with Boys & Girls Clubs through the end of the year.
