Probe begins into mysterious death of university student

RAWALPINDI: After colleagues of Aimen Shafiq, a psychology student, raised suspicions over her mysterious death, the Sadiqabad police have registered a preliminary report and recorded the statements of her husband and mother-in-law.

Taking notice of the incident, City Police Officer (CPO) Mohammad Ahsan Younas ordered an immediate investigation into the death of the BS psychology student of a private university in Shakrial.

After the directions from the CPO, Station House Officer (SHO) Sadiqabad Tahir Rehan started an investigation and is likely to file an application in court to exhume the body of the student to conduct a postmortem to ascertain the actual cause of her death.

One of her fellow students, Laraib Niazi, tweeted: “We request you [CPO] to please mark the case to the relevant police station to lodge FIR at earliest. The incident happened at New Shakryal (Sadiqabad).”

She said the incident happened in her in-laws’ house in Raja Town on Dec 4, 2020. The deceased was not happy with her marriage and often used to discuss it with her friends, she added.

After burial of the student, her friends took to the social media and drew the attention of senior police officers and demanded an investigation.

According to officials, Sadiqabad police summoned the woman’s husband Sharjeelur Rehman Satti and his mother, a resident of Kotli Satyan, and recorded their statements. They claimed that Aimen’s death was natural and the allegations were baseless.

The police registered a report on its daily register.

Sources said the woman and her husband were cousins and lived in the same house. After the death of her father, she also used to live with her mother.

According to the police, an application has been filed in the court along with summons of both the parties for exhumation of the body. After getting permission from the court, the body of the woman will be exhumed for a postmortem.

A police spokesman said after the death of the woman she was laid to rest by her family and police were not informed at that time by anybody.
