Dallas County on Tuesday reported 1,105 more coronavirus cases, all of them considered new. Eight new COVID-19 deaths also were reported.

The latest victims included three Dallas residents: a woman in her 50s, a woman in her 60s and a man in his 90s. The other victims were two Grand Prairie residents, a man in his 60s and a woman in her 70s; a DeSoto man in his 40s; a Garland woman in her 70s; and an Irving man in his 20s.

All eight had underlying high-risk health conditions, officials said.

County Judge Clay Jenkins said in a written statement that residents should take advantage of the pleasant weather in the forecast for the coming days to get outside while maintaining social distance from other people.

“Remember that when you’re not at home and inside any building, including your own office building, doctors strongly recommend that you be masked for the duration of the time that you’re in the building,” he said.

Of the new cases reported Tuesday, 860 are confirmed and 245 are probable. The newly reported cases bring the county’s total confirmed cases to 137,143 and probable cases to 13,797. The county has recorded 1,245 confirmed COVID-19 deaths and 39 probable deaths.

The county announced it is counting only positive antigen tests (sometimes called rapid tests) as probable cases; a few antibody and “household” results were included previously.

While other North Texas counties provide estimates for how many people have recovered from the virus, Dallas County officials do not report recoveries, noting that the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not use that metric.

Health officials use hospitalizations, intensive-care admissions and emergency room visits as key metrics to track the real-time impact of COVID-19 in the county. In the 24-hour period that ended Monday, 766 COVID-19 patients were in acute care in hospitals in the county. During the same period, 428 ER visits were for symptoms of the disease.

Statewide data

Across the state, 15,103 new cases and 181 COVID-19 deaths were reported Tuesday. Texas has now reported 1,272,504 confirmed cases and 22,808 fatalities.

The new cases were the second-most Texas has reported in a single day, behind the 15,182 it reported the previous Tuesday.

There are 9,028 COVID-19 patients in Texas hospitals, including 2,563 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

The rate of hospitalizations that are COVID-19 patients in North Texas rose to 16.6% on Tuesday; the region will remain under stricter virus safety measures until the rate is below 15% for seven consecutive days.

The seven-day average positivity rate statewide, based on the date of test specimen collection, was 12.5% as of Monday. State health officials said using data based on when people were tested provides the most accurate positivity rate.

The state also provides a positivity rate based on when lab results were reported to the state; that rate stood at 13.4% as of Monday.

Officials previously calculated Texas’ coronavirus positivity rate by dividing the most recent seven days of new positive test results by the most recent seven days of total new test results. By that measure, the positivity rate is now 14.3%, according to the state dashboard.

A spokesman for the Texas Department of State Health Services said that positivity rate data based on lab results and new cases will likely be phased out but is still being provided for transparency and continuity purposes.

Tarrant County reported 860 coronavirus cases and 13 new deaths Tuesday.

Eight Fort Worth residents were among the latest victims: two men and a woman in their 60s, two women in their 70s, a man and a woman in their 80s and a woman in her 90s. The other victims were an Arlington woman in her 70s, a Euless man in his 70s, a Forest Hill man in his 70s, a Grapevine woman in her 30s and a White Settlement woman in her 60s. All 13 had underlying health conditions, officials said.

The newly reported cases bring the county’s total to 112,725, including 99,647 confirmed cases, 13,078 probable cases and 79,977 recoveries. The death toll stands at 898.

According to Tuesday’s numbers on the county dashboard, 890 people are hospitalized with the virus. The county’s public health director, Vinny Tanjea, said that just 18 of Tarrant County’s roughly 550 ICU beds were available, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

Collin County

The state added 243 coronavirus cases to Collin County’s total Tuesday bringing the tally to 29,797. Five new COVID-19 fatalities also were reported, bringing the county’s death toll to 284.

No details about the latest victims were available.

According to state data, the county has 3,463 active cases of the virus.

The county’s coronavirus dashboard provides only total hospitalizations, now at 347.

Denton County

Denton County reported 560 coronavirus cases — of which 394 are active — and three new deaths Tuesday.

The latest victims were a man older than 80 who lived at Longmeadow Healthcare Center in Justin, a Lewisville man in his 50s and a woman in her 70s who lived at Cedar Ridge Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Pilot Point.

The newly reported cases bring the county’s total to 27,181, including 7,328 that are active and 19,692 that are recoveries. The death toll stands at 161.

The newly reported cases raised the county’s total molecular cases to 22,856, while antigen cases stand at 4,325.

There are 142 COVID-19 patients hospitalized, according to the county’s data. Just six of the county’s 79 ICU beds are available.

The latest numbers are:

  • Rockwall County: 3,691 cases, 40 deaths.
  • Kaufman County: 5,876 cases, 87 deaths.
  • Ellis County: 8,270 cases, 127 deaths.
