Authorities investigating the death of beloved town turkey, an ‘Argyle icon’

Authorities are investigating the death of a locally beloved turkey in the Denton County town of Argyle.

The turkey — called Tom by some and George by others — had been known around town for years, often causing traffic delays and harassing residents, the Cross Timbers Gazette reported.

Argyle Police confirmed the animal’s death in a tweet Wednesday afternoon.

“Like everyone else, we are saddened to see an Argyle icon go,” the department said.

Police learned Wednesday morning through social media that the turkey may have been harmed, according to a statement from Police Chief Emmitt R. Jackson.

Police have interviewed and gathered video footage in connection with the case and conducted several interviews, Jackson said.

No details about any possible suspects were released, but police said the case was turned over to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to determine whether any charges would be filed.

A game warden, Joshua Bulger, told the Denton Record-Chronicle that authorities were still investigating the turkey’s death.

“All we know is someone pulled over onto the side of the road this morning and it sounds like they wrung the turkey’s neck,” Bulger told the paper, confirming that the animal was Argyle’s iconic turkey.

A Facebook page for the turkey, was flooded with comments mourning his death.

“Disgusting! Poor George,” one comment read. “I hope they send this guy to jail.” Another commenter posted a photo of the bird superimposed over a background of clouds.
