Officers confronted the driver when he stopped the vehicle near the 1400 block of Bosque Drive, not far from the intersection of North County Country Club Drive and Pleasant Valley Road in northeastern Garland.

“While officers were attempting to communicate with the driver, they heard a gunshot come from inside the stolen vehicle,” the Garland Police Department said in a press release.

“Officers observed that the driver was suffering from a gunshot wound,” the release added.

The police officers found a handgun in the vehicle, and Garland paramedics transported the suspect to a nearby hospital, where he “remains in critical condition,” Garland police said on Friday.

Police investigators believe that the man shot himself and that police officers had not fired shots during the incident.

“The identity of the man is not being release at this time,” the press release said. “The investigation is ongoing.”
