Frisco’s latest COVID-19 updates, including cases at Frisco ISD spiking to more than 1,500 cases

Texas now leads the nation with the highest number of positive coronavirus tests of any state. Health officials began to warn of another surge in early- to mid-October. The state became the first in the U.S. to hit 1 million cases.

The state became the first in the U.S. to hit 1 million cases. North Texas met the critical threshold of hospitalized COVID-19 patients set by Gov. Greg Abbott, which initiated rollbacks on Saturday. Across 16 counties — including Collin, Dallas, Denton and Tarrant counties — bars are shut down and restaurants have been limited to 50% capacity.

Here’s how coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, has affected Frisco.

Coronavirus cases

The city stopped publishing case numbers indefinitely on Sept. 1. Additionally, Collin County stopped publishing countywide data, with the exception of hospitalizations, on Nov. 10.

A notice on the Collin County dashboard reads: “Collin County will no longer post COVID-19 case data on this website. Counts of new and confirmed cases, those who have recovered, and COVID-related deaths in Collin County may be obtained from the Department of State Health Services at this link. Collin County will continue to report hospitalization data, as that information comes from daily polls of local hospitals reporting COVID-19 patients in their facilities.”

However, the Texas Department of State Health Services continues to report Collin County data. The state added 586 confirmed coronavirus cases to Collin County’s total Monday, bringing the tally to 32,868. No new COVID-19 fatalities also were reported, leaving the county’s death toll at 300.According to state data, the county has 4,006 active cases of the virus and has recorded 28,862 recoveries. The county’s coronavirus dashboard provides only total hospitalizations, now at 416. That’s an increase of 57 in the past day alone and a record for the entire pandemic.

Case totals Collin County Denton County
Confirmed cases 33,522 25,856
Active 3,965 9,039

Education

Frisco ISD has seen a large spike in cases since the start of November, reporting 1,087 new cases in the past 45 days. This accounts for 70% of all reported cases since Aug. 13. The district now reports a total of 1,531 cases: 370 staff members and 1,161 students, an increase of 164 since Dec. 10.

The district began school on Aug. 13 with an all-virtual start. Frisco ISD published its back-to-school plan for the 2020-21 school year in early July and asked families to commit to online or in-person learning for the semester.

Students who committed to in-person learning returned to campuses on Sept. 3. Shortly before the first day of in-person learning, Frisco ISD released a dashboard for updates on district COVID-19 cases.

For students attending in-person classes, the district implements additional health and safety measures on campuses, which may be updated to comply with any new state guidelines. (View the complete guide to Frisco ISD’s return to the school year.)

Students learning remotely can borrow Chromebooks, wireless hot spots and calculators from the school district. Additionally, the district is hosting a school supply drive to provide low-income students with supplies and backpacks. The district also offers a curbside pickup option for students.
