Man found dead in Old East Dallas apartment fire

A man was found dead in an apartment fire Wednesday afternoon in Old East Dallas, officials say.

Dallas Fire-Rescue was called just after 5 p.m. to the 4600 block of Lafayette Street, where smoke and fire had been reported coming out of a second-floor unit.

Firefighters, who extinguished the blaze in about half an hour, found an unconscious man in a hallway.

The man, whose cause of death has not been determined, was pronounced dead at the apartment. His name has not been released.

One additional apartment was damaged in the blaze, and the American Red Cross was assisting its displaced tenant.

Authorities are working to determine how the fire started.
