Meteorologists eyeing potential for rain-snow mix in Dallas-Fort Worth this week

North Texas might end 2020 with a snowy surprise.

Though plenty is still uncertain in the forecast, meteorologists are eyeing the potential for a rain-snow mix Wednesday night into Thursday.

Before that chance of wintry precipitation, a cold front is expected to move through North Texas on Tuesday, bringing with it the potential for widespread rain, according to Juan Hernandez, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

Showers and storms could produce about an inch of rain across Dallas-Fort Worth late Tuesday through Wednesday, according to Hernandez. While widespread severe weather is not expected, some storms could produce some gusty winds, he added.

Then the forecast gets tricky.

With temperatures expected to drop into the low 30s Wednesday and Thursday, if there is enough moisture in the air, North Texas could see a mixture of rain and snow, according to Hernandez.

“This [cold air] will have readings dropping to near freezing overnight into Thursday morning, which could have rain initially mixing with sleet while a warm layer lingers, eventually mixing with or even briefly changing over to snow as the low draws,” Hernandez said in a forecast update.

KXAS-TV (NBC5) weather anchor Keisha Burns is also eyeing the potential for wintry weather Wednesday into Thursday.

“Any lingering moisture — as much cooler air moves in — could change to sleet or even a chance for snow,” Burns said. “That potential will be there late Wednesday into Thursday, so that’s one to watch.”

Though there are uncertainties in the forecast — like whether any of that rain-snow mix will accumulate — cold weather later this week is a certainty. After Wednesday, highs are not expected to get out of the 50s, with lows in the 30s through the weekend, according to the Weather Service.

“Either way, cold weather will greet the region as we enter 2021 with night time lows at or below freezing for most of the area Wednesday through Saturday,” Hernandez said.

Here’s what KXAS-TV (NBC5) has in the forecast:

Sunday: 72/49

Monday: 60/41

Tuesday: 64/50; light rain showers

Wednesday: 57/52; rain and thunderstorms

Thursday: 49/33
