DeSoto City Council fails to reach quorum at meeting on CARES Act funding

A special meeting of the DeSoto City Council on Tuesday morning aimed at discussing the disbursement of CARES Act funds wasn’t attended by enough council members to reach quorum.

The city charter requires at least five of the council’s seven members to be present for voting matters. It was unclear which council members were not in attendance or why they didn’t attend.

The topic will be discussed at the council’s next regular meeting, on Jan. 5, according to the city’s Facebook page.

So far the city has disbursed about $2 million in CARES Act grants, including about $825,000 in residential assistance and $500,000 in business funding.

But as the National Development Council reviews applications ahead of a Dec. 30 grant deadline, more than $900,000 of CARES Act funding allocated to DeSoto remains unspent. Tuesday’s meeting would’ve allowed council members to consider authorizing the city manager to use that money to reimburse the city for public-safety costs.
