Snow could mix in with rain coming into parts of SE Texas

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A winter storm moving through Texas will send snowflakes flying through a large part of the state Sunday, but it’s too soon to say definitively if they will reach as far south as Houston.
Before this winter storm impacts us, we’ll enjoy a couple more cold days with sunshine. Temperatures Friday morning will start around 40 degrees, then warm into the upper 50s. Frost will be possible Saturday morning as temps dip into the mid 30s, then sunshine will warm temps backs into the 50s.

Sunday is when our weather will be impacted by the winter storm.

Will it snow in Houston on Sunday?

The short answer is probably not.

The longer answer is that it all depends on the exact track of a storm system that is still over 2,000 miles away from Houston. At this time we expect a cold rain to settle in during the day with temperatures hovering in the 40s. Most of us will pick up about an inch of rain. Once we get to Sunday evening and it gets even colder, the rain/snow line is expected to push into parts of Southeast Texas. How far south it goes is still uncertain.

So what are the chances any of that cold rain turns to snow in Houston?

At this time we are giving it a 20% chance that snowflakes could reach the north side of Houston, but there’s less than a 10% chance of snowflakes reaching Houston south of I-10.

Okay, then where is it most likely to snow in Southeast Texas?

It’s looking more likely that snowflakes will fly across parts of Brazos, Grimes, Montgomery, Polk, San Jacinto, and Walker Counties.

Wherever it snows, will anything stick?

Because any snow would fall at night, it is possible that snow could accumulate primarily on grassy surfaces. At this time we think it is unlikely we will see any widespread road problems in our part of Texas.

How much snow could fall?

It’s still too soon to pin down accumulation totals, but where computer models show snow in our northern counties, projections range from just a trace to over 6″.

Stay tuned!
