Officers who were called to the 3700 block of Biglow Street, near Overton and Lancaster roads, about 6 p.m. found Erick-Dewayne Griffin with multiple gunshot wounds in the front yard of a home.

He died later at a hospital, police said.

Griffin’s girlfriend told police that they had gotten into an argument about him damaging a mirror on her car and that her brother — Jairus LaAnthony Tolbert, 24 — walked up and shot Griffin, an arrest-warrant affidavit says.

The girlfriend said that the argument had not turned physical before the shooting, but another witness said it had and that Griffin had put his hands up and was turning away before he was shot, according to the affidavit.

Tolbert agreed to speak to detectives, the affidavit says, and said that Griffin had Tolbert’s sister in a headlock and that he had to physically separate the couple. Tolbert said he then pushed Griffin away and shot him twice to defend his sister, according to the affidavit.

He then put his gun on the ground, went inside the home and waited for police, the affidavit says.

Tolbert was taken to the Dallas County jail and faces a murder charge, police said. His bail was set at $250,000, and it was unclear whether he had an attorney.
