Cold front arrives Thursday evening, chilly rain possible Friday

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — We are getting an early taste of spring, but it won’t be long before the weather reminds us we’re still in winter.

We are starting off Thursday with mostly cloudy skies and mild morning temperatures. Thursday afternoon we expect temperatures to pop up toward record territory near 80! It will also be breezy with southwest winds at 15-25 mph. A cold front will blow through Houston Thursday evening with a 20% chance for showers.

What kind of weather can we expect behind this cold front?

Temperatures on Friday will start in the upper 40s but only rebound into the mid 50s as an upper air disturbance blows in behind the front. It now looks like this disturbance will pack more moisture, bringing extensive clouds and some chilly rain showers. The cool winds will pick up from the northeast at 10-20 mph.

What can we expect for the weekend?

The weekend should be mostly dry with lots of sunshine. Temperatures will be seasonal Saturday with lows in the 40s and highs in the 60s. It now looks like the front we expected to blow in late Saturday will stall out just before reaching Houston. That means Sunday won’t be as cold and end up slightly warmer than Saturday. We expect lows in the mid 40s and highs near 70 for Super Bowl Sunday.

Is it true that an arctic cold front could reach us next week?

We expect another cold front to reach us next Tuesday, and yes, it is possible artic air could get in the mix behind it. It still remains uncertain as to whether or not we will get any of the arctic chill that will be moving into the country, but the data is trending colder for Houston and all of Texas. If the arctic high pressure does move straight south down the Plains, our coldest weather would likely occur right around Valentine’s Day weekend. For now we are forecasting lows in the 30s and highs in the 40s start next Friday, February 12th.

Does this mean we could get snow?

It is possible that moisture and cold air aloft could overlap at just the right time to bring wintry precipitation to Southeast Texas, but at this time the chance of that occurring is less than 10%. In other words, don’t get your hopes up just yet.
