Snow and ice possible in Texas before Valentine’s Day

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Is there a chance for snow in Texas next week?

Yes, but it’s too soon to say for certain where it will fall. A huge mass of Arctic air will invade the country and make it all the way to the Gulf coast by Valentine’s Day weekend.

Moisture coming in from the west will mix with that cold air to produce freezing rain, ice, and snow in parts of Texas. North Texas and the Panhandle are most favored for the wintry precip at this time.

Will the Houston-area see anything frozen fall from the sky?

It’s possible, but far from certain. Our atmosphere may get cold enough to support some sleet or freezing rain around next Friday. Before then, it’ll just be a cold rain starting on Wednesday. Wintry precip could also occur over Valentine’s Day weekend, but it all depends on the severity of the cold along with the timing of the moisture.

This event is still very far away and a lot can change, so stay tuned.

While snow in Houston doesn’t happen every winter, it does indeed happen. In the video, take a look back at the major snow days in the city’s history.
