Watch what happened when a dog fell through the ice into a pool in Southlake

An Australian shepherd named Christi is lucky to be alive after she fell through the ice covering a backyard pool Monday morning.

Owner Dan Holmes of Southlake, who lives in the Timarron neighborhood, posted video of the accident to Facebook.

“Warning, if you have pets be careful,” the post read. “Watch this video, thank goodness I was out near the pool.”

In the video, the two dogs are wandering in the backyard, at first along the pool’s perimeter.

Then Christi decided it was time to walk on water, but she fell through the ice almost immediately. Holmes scrambled into the water, at first rolling on the ice, before he, too, fell through it.

He was able to retrieve the dog from the water and said she’s doing well. Christi also fell in when she was 8 weeks old before Holmes taught her to use the steps to get in and out — that’s what she was trying to do after she fell, he said.

He shared the video to caution other dog and pool owners about the possibilty of this happening during this week’s extreme weather.

“We love Christi,” Holmes said. “This is the second time I have saved her. Most of all, [we] want everyone to know our pets do not understand this kind of weather, and you must be safe.”
