Two kids rescued after falling through icy pond in McKinney

Two children were rescued Friday after falling through the ice at a pond near Lake Forest and Highland drives in McKinney.

Mayor George Fuller posted about the incident a day after he warned residents about the danger on his Facebook page.

“Today, our McKinney Fire Department and Police Department arrived on the scene after two kids fell through the ice on a pond near Lake Forest and Highland. They are OK thankfully, but it should be a clear warning that danger does in-fact exist on our “frozen over” Texas lakes and ponds.

“PLEASE, keep our kids safe, the novelty of skating and playing on an iced over pond is not worth the possibility of losing a child,” he posted on Facebook.

Good Samaritans pulled the children from the pond after they had been in the water for several minutes, according to the McKinney Courier-Gazette.

First responders were on the scene about 2 p.m., McKinney Fire Department public information officer Merit Ossian told the newspaper.

The fire department also posted about the incident on social media.

“2 kids are lucky to be okay after falling through the ice on a pond near Lake Forest and Highland. They were out when MFD crews arrived. We did a medical check and got them home. Please talk to your kids about the dangers of walking on icy lakes and other waterways! Bystanders said some other kids were playing hockey on this same area earlier today.”

In his warning Thursday, Fuller said he had seen children gravitating to area ponds and lakes, including Towne Lake Recreation Area.

“It came to my attention that there were kids caught skating on Town Lake today and I have been messaged by residents that they heard that there were plans to try again tomorrow. Certainly, this is not allowed and we will have police patrolling the area. We all know the tragedy that could be reported on the news tomorrow evening, God forbid there was an accident.

“Please speak with your kids, let them know that skating (or any activity for that matter) on the lake is forbidden, and if they own ice skates, play hockey, etc. please make sure they are not leaving the house with them. Also, there are other lakes around that are frozen over. Please, let’s all keep watch!”
