Severe thunderstorm watch issued for Dallas-Fort Worth

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for North Texas in effect through 6 p.m. Sunday.

Thunderstorms were likely as a cold front was set to move through the area Sunday. The Weather Service cautioned that some storms could produce large hail and wind gusts up to 70 mph.

The possibility for tornadoes could not be ruled out, according to the Weather Service.

In an update on Twitter about 11 a.m., the Weather Service said a storm moving northeast through Denton County was capable of producing nickel-size hail.

“If it continues to strengthen, hail size is expected to increase,” the Weather Service posted.

After the cold front moved through, the threat for severe weather was expected to decrease, according to Jason Dunn, a Weather Service meteorologist.
