Man booked under ATA for firing outside Diplomatic Enclave

ISLAMABAD: The man who resorted to firing at one of the gates of Diplomatic Enclave was booked under Section 7 of Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) and other criminal charges, police said on Friday.

A senior police officer, when contacted, told Dawn on condition of anonymity that though the man had resorted to firing in the air, a murder attempt section had been added to the charges.

“It was a serious security breach and raised questions over the security of the Diplomatic Enclave,” he said.

A report of the incident, however, said the man had found a police banker adjacent to the gate empty and an SMG lying there.

The man took the gun and fired three to four bullets into the air, the report said.

However, the FIR says a policeman was present in the bunker and the man approached him and snatched his SMG after physical confrontation.

The FIR said the man fired at the policeman with an intention to kill him but the policeman succeeded in saving himself from the gunshot and then captured the suspect.

A few bullets fired by the man also hit the shade of the gate and roof, the FIR added The FIR was registered on the statement of one of the policemen deployed at the gate.

When contacted, Media Director AIG Operations Usman Tipu told Dawn that the man snatched the weapon from the policeman sitting in the bunker. After snatching the weapon, he fired two to three bullets.

Shortly, he was caught and other police teams also reached the spot, he said.
