Murder suspect’s own surveillance footage showed him killing teen, Dallas police say

A suspect is in custody 15 months after the fatal shooting of a teenager who was driving in Pleasant Grove.

Ivan Joey Piedra, 22, was booked into the Dallas County jail Monday on a murder charge in connection with the slaying of Mark Lemmons.

Piedra also faces charges of aggravated assault, evading arrest and failure to identify as a fugitive, and his total bail is set at $726,000. He did not have an attorney listed in court records.

Lemmons, 18, was shot in the head Jan. 4, 2020, and fell into a coma. He died 12 days later.

According to an arrest-warrant affidavit, Lemmons and a woman were doing doughnuts in his car at the intersection of Military Parkway and Fair Vista Drive at the time of the shooting.

The woman told police that Lemmons had been involved in a dispute with a man who lived a block from that intersection — Piedra. She also said that Lemmons’ Chrysler “has a distinct sound and is known in the area for its noise,” the affidavit says.

Police later obtained a search warrant for the detached garage where Piedra lived, where they reported finding an assault rifle, ammunition and a DVR for a surveillance system. Footage on that DVR showed Piedra run toward Lemmons’ car and fire a handgun, then return to the garage, the affidavit says.

Police said last year that they believed Piedra had fled to Mexico. It was unclear how they found him.
