Texas woman hospitalized with possible blood clots after getting Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine

A Texas woman was hospitalized with possible blood clots after receiving the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, the state health department said.

The Texas Department of State Health Services was notified about the case Wednesday afternoon by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention through its Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, said spokesman Douglas Loveday.

The patient is an adult woman who was hospitalized with “symptoms that appear to be consistent” with the blood clot cases that prompted federal health officials to recommend a pause in using the single-dose shot, Loveday said.

Loveday said the state health department would not be providing any other details about the woman to protect her privacy.

The CDC and the Food and Drug Administration recommended the pause on April 13 after announcing that they were investigating six cases of rare but potentially dangerous blood clots.

The cases were in women between the ages of 18 and 48 and occurred 6 to 13 days after vaccination, the agencies said. One woman died.

U.S. officials lifted the pause on Friday, determining that the benefits of the vaccine outweighed the risk.

The type of blood clot that occurred in the cases associated with the vaccine is found in the blood vessels that drain blood from the brain, the CDC says. The clots are combined with low platelets, which help blood clot and stop bleeding.

On its website, the CDC says it does not have enough information to know whether the vaccine is related to or caused the condition, but that federal health officials recommended the pause “to be extra careful.”

At the time of the pause, more than 7.5 million doses of the vaccine had been administered in the U.S., according to the CDC.

The CDC says people who got the Johnson & Johnson shot should monitor for the following symptoms within three weeks of vaccination: severe headaches, backaches, blurry vision, fainting, seizures, severe abdomen, stomach or chest pain, leg swelling, shortness of breath, tiny red spots on the skin and new or easy bruising or bleeding.
