15-year-old boy in custody after shooting teen in Garland, police say

Authorities took a 15-year-old boy into custody Wednesday afternoon in connection with a shooting in Garland.

The boy, whose name was not publicly released, was booked into the Garland Juvenile Detention Center on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, police said.

Police were dispatched just before 3 p.m. to reports of a disturbance at an apartment complex in the 2700 block of West Walnut Street, near Shiloh Road and Forest Lane.

Police said a group had gathered there before a dispute escalated and gunshots were fired. A 17-year-old boy was hit in the leg and taken to a hospital; he is expected to survive. Several others fled the scene, including the 15-year-old, police said.

The suspect was apprehended in the 3000 block of Edgewood Drive, about half a mile away from the shooting scene.

Police said they were continuing to investigate but that everyone involved has been identified and the area is secure..
